anybody wants to study abroad?

for those of you interested in studying a Master abroad, here’s some info a friend of the IEEE sent me about their new tuition-fee-free program at KTH Stockholm

Dear Students,

I would like draw your attention to a two-year international
English-language M.Sc. program in Network Services and Systems, given at
KTH, the Royal Institute of Technology, in Stockholm, Sweden. The
program is highly selective and demanding, and it prepares students for
research or industrial careers in this dynamic, challenging and rapidly
growing field of engineering. There are opportunities for students who
achieve exceptionally well to continue with doctoral studies at KTH.

KTH is one of the leading technical universities in Europe, and
Stockholm consistently ranks as one of the most livable cities in the
world.
Students who are admitted to the program may study *without tuition*. We
had more than 200 applications this year for twenty seats. The next
round of the program starts in late August 2008 and the application
deadline is February 1, 2008.

Please find a flyer with further details attached (also available at
http://www.ee.kth.se/lcn/Flyer.htm). Should you have a question or
comment, please get back to me.

Sincerely,

Gunnar Karlsson
Professor
KTH EE/LCN - 100 44 Stockholm - Sweden

Feel free to pass it around if you know people who may be interested! As a personal note, I have to say the KTH is a cool place, with a very nice environment and in a beautiful city so… give it a try! }:)

back from bucharest

I just got back from my trip to Bucharest, Romania, for the IEEE Region 8 Committee meeting. It hasn’t been as fun as it usually is, but still seeing so many friends definitely was worth it!

Plus, there were some new things to be learned during this trip that I want to share with you. For example, now I know that…

  • … in the Linate airport, in Milan, the giant notice on top of the main building, that usually shows the airport name, is a logo of Emporio Armani (note: there´s another in Milan Malpensa, but it is smaller)
  • … the notes of the rumanian currency, the Lei, are made of plastic, not paper
  • … bear steak is similar to beef, but a bit drier and with different aftertaste. The wild boar ones are awesome. You can eat both of those in Romania
  • … turkish people call each other “brother” or “sister”, unless the age difference is of around 10 years, in which case they use “uncle” or “aunt”

So, lots of new experiences to add to the list… and now, back in London, getting ready for a more relaxed week and then meetings in Santiago de Chile for finishing details on the next edition of IEEEXtreme (our programming contest).

Will keep you informed how that goes! };)

excuses, excuses…

Mmm… welll, I should be able to find a proper excuse for not writing here at all during all this time… I don´t know, like “my dog ate my keyboard” or “the building I was in collapsed and it took me all this time just to get out of there… and I’ve posted this entry as soon as I got out!”

… or, even better “I was busy saving the planet of an invasion of giant killer-bugs!” After all, for that one I’ve got evidence here in Google Maps!

But nope, none of that has happened, I’ve just been very busy with other things, like travelling around for work, work itself and IEEE SBC in Paris (hey, we even have pictures!)

le tour eiffel, at night

But I promise to be a good boy and post more often…

… oh! and eat all my vegetables and go early to bed, of course… };P

P.S. btw, did I mention I’m running on the next elections for IEEE Vicechair of Student Activities for Region 8? Wish me luck!

transformers y esibot

ieee student branch website contest 2006

Yet another year it’s time for the the IEEE Student Branch Website Contest! Branches get ready for the show!

The website contest is a quite successful activity at IEEE that branches can use to show the world how good they are doing (and in most cases, to use it as an incentive for their webmasters to so that work they’ve been delaying for some time and polishing their websites! };D)

The deadline for submission in Region 8 is March 31st (as opposed to the 15th most regions use)… so you still have 29 days to get your webpage ready!

You can read more about the contest and get details about rules, submission guidelines and such here, in the official webpage

Will be waiting for a lot of entries! Good luck everybody! }:)

ieee rss feeds & new website

Back in september, IEEE RAB approved the electronic format availability of both IEEE Spectrum (our all-fields magazine) and IEEE Potentials (our magazine for students) to ALL IEEE members, in the case of Potentials, and to everybody out there in the case of IEEE Spectrum. This is definitely good, but what is even cooler is that now you can also syndicate news to your favourite RSS aggregator to help keep you updated.

In case you’re interested, here are the RSS links:

Quite a jump in the modern world, isn’t it? };P

To add even more spice to the mix, the new look for the IEEE website has recently being launched. Take a look and let webmasters know what you think!

Update: somebody wanted me to point out, for those who might be interested, that ACM Crossroads, the ACM magazine for students, also has an open online version.

generation of greatness

While looking after some information about Creative Commons I happened to drop by the home page of the founding director of the project, Hal Abelson (which by the way is also partly responsible for some other wonderful things like the MIT OpenCourseware) and was pointed out to this 1957 Memorial Lecture by Edwin Land, president of Polaroid Corp, entitled “Generation of Greatness” I want to share it with all of you, as I think it pretty much contains the essence of things many of us think need to change in universities, especially in Technical Schools

coding weekend for the IEEE Spanish Section portal

We spent this weekend in Madrid, enclaustrated in the IEEE Student Branch of the UPM, working on the Spanish section portal project. We left a prototype pretty much ready, I should say. We’ll try to beta-test it during the next weeks

Not everything was coding, of course. We even had the opportunity of seeing something not very typical in Madrid: the Paseo de la Castellana populated by no cars. It was during the city marathon, so they got all the surrounding area closed to traffic and we had the opportunity to walk in the middle of the street and take some photos:

zracna luka Zagreb (Zagreb airport)

So, this is the only photo I’ve been able to get to prove that I’ve actually been in Zagreb (Croatia):

a bus at Zagreb airport

Well, actually I should recognize I had a great time during the roundtable. I got to ramble around with Marko and Michael (I miss you, guys!), say hello to some others I hadn’t seen in some time (like Eva and Mario) and met a lot of new people (including all these bunch of very crazy guys fro Zagreb Student Branch, which are the kind of people you shouldn’t left alone in a pub with a lot of girls };P). Of course the only problem being that as I was so short on time (doing a bit more travel than normal this month) I had time to: arrive to the airport, hug marko, go clubbing, dance, go sleep 4 hours, wake up, go to roundtable, eat, back to roundtable, go party, sleep 3 hours and go back to the airport,… and that was it! };P

I promise to post more photos when I get them and have some time…

plans for “Future of IEEE Student Membership” roundtable

So very soon we will be running this students event in which we’ll get to talk to some IEEE student members(mainly from Eastern Europe branches) to tell them about the new initiatives in IEEE and get their feedback. This is quite important, as I think you should never lose contact with “the real world”. I’ve always said IEEE does a lot of good stuff for students, but the point is that the majority of that actions are completely unknown to most of them… hopefully the R8 Portal project will help a little on bridging the gap

We’ll, I’ve prepared a little presentation for the event I’ve entitled “With love, from SAC to you” (try to sing the title along with some Beatles music in the background). Here I’ll quickly summarize the points I expect to talk about:
